RSA 2020 – A Quick Look at What Netskope Has in Store and Recommends for Attendees

                                      Jan 30 2020

The cybersecurity industry moves at a breakneck pace, to the point that security professionals may already feel like they’re behind on the latest innovations and vulnerabilities before the first months of 2020 are over. And for good reason, as malicious actors haven’t stopped any of their efforts either. The rise in enterprises making the leap to cloud means more enterprises are reckoning with a perimeter that no longer exists. With the continued growth of the workforce leveraging their personal devices, and the increasing reliance on cloud applications, these enterprises are thinking about new ways to approach their architecture.

It’s for these reasons that nearly 40,000 cybersecurity professionals will flock to RSA 2020 which starts on February 23rd in San Francisco. The reality, though, is that RSA is a massive and sprawling show comprised of hundreds of sessions, and a sea full of vendors to navigate through. It’s no wonder that so many attendees struggle to get to everything they want to see and walk away from the show with a cybersecurity hangover. It’s with this in mind that we’re providing a sneak peek of what Netskope is up to at RSA 2020 along with some tips on content that will be worth your while.

                                      Hot Topics for RSA 2020

Amid the sea of security companies vying for your attention, there are already some common themes developing around Zero Trust and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE); both of which fit nicely into RSA’s overall theme, “The Human Element.”

                                      Zero Trust

An architectural principle built around the idea of changing the conversation around trust and the traditional perimeter. Where trust was once implicit, trusting anything within the perimeter of your organization, there is no longer a perimeter in the traditional sense. Instead, Zero Trust security architectures are all about establishing granular controls and visibility and applying those principles to make enterprise network access more secure. While Zero Trust has been around in the industry for quite some time now, there has been a renewed interest in it as of late, so you’re bound to see a lot of vendors talking about their Zero Trust solutions at RSA this year. Don’t just take our word for it either! Check out this session about the building blocks of Zero Trust, featuring Jerry Chapman from our partner Optiv.

                                      SASE

Coined by Gartner in August 2019, SASE has become an increasingly hot topic of discussion as the concept pushes organizations to rethink how they presently do network and security architecture. As outlined in their 2019 study, SASE is positioned as providing security services from the cloud to end users, regardless of where they are (geographically). This new software-defined security model requires a complete transformation of existing network and security architectures with a focus on edge computing and performance based security services. Many security vendors are already claiming a SASE based solution in order to jump on the bandwagon, however SASE itself is an architectural framework; not a product or solution. In other words, if you’re talking to a vendor at RSA and they say they are a SASE solution, be sure to look under the hood — if you don’t find a fully cloud-native architecture, they are playing fast and loose with the SASE term. If you need a refresher on the basics of SASE before RSA, here’s the Gartner report as well as a post on the inversion of network and security

Alongside these two behemoth topics, there are also plenty of other things on the minds of other security professionals, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Specifically, there are multiple sessions digging into AI/ML, discussing the potential to leverage them for faster threat detection and response. Additionally, there’s also a heavy emphasis on exploring security frameworks like MITRE ATT&CK or NIST. This session featuring Timothy McIntyre from our partner Okta on use cases for the NIST framework should be interesting. Another talk from one of our partners to keep in mind is Cylance’s Josh Lemos who will look at the work that goes into defending against multidimensional attacks and the evolution of threats. These are all just a taste of what RSA has to offer.

Where to Find Netskope at RSA

Why Everyone Needs a Cloud-First Security Program – SASEfaction Guaranteed!

Security teams are constantly keeping up with complex attacks leveraging the cloud, but traditional security security stacks just can’t keep pace with malicious actors or insiders. In this session we’ll explore Gartner’s new SASE framework and how organizations can utilize Zero Trust, visibility into cloud-based traffic and cloud threat protection to build a modernized cloud-first stack.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) bolster new cyber-defenses but can they also make us more vulnerable? As hackers, big business and “big brother” weaponize techniques to watch our every move, this elite panel of experts will explore the risks and new ways to protect data. Panelists will focus on ways to become more proactive and stay a step ahead of this next wave of threats.
